The chairman of the House Education Committee wants a Republican congresswoman who has previously supported conspiracy theories about school shootings off his committee.

Rep. Bobby Scott, D-W. Scott cited Green's previous support for unsubstantiated claims that the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, was a "false flag" operation and that other school shootings were somehow staged.

"House Republicans appointed someone to this committee who claimed that the killing of 14 students and three teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was staged," Scott said in a statement Thursday.

Scott added that by placing Green on the committee, House Republican leaders are "sending a clear message to students, parents and teachers about the views of the Republican Party."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday reinforced Scott's position by condemning Republicans' decision to put Green on his committee, telling reporters: "What could they be thinking? ... It's absolutely horrible." In addition, Rep. Recent revelations about Green's support for these conspiracy theories have caused consternation among Democrats in Washington. Green has also drawn national headlines for her support of QAnon, a name used for various conspiracy theories that the FBI has categorized as a domestic terrorist threat.

Republicans announced Green's appointment to the committee on Monday, although it has not been finalized and approved by GOP leadership and the full House.

A spokesman for the Georgia congressman did not directly address her previous comments on social media about the school shooting Tuesday, focusing on Green's support for school choice and school reopening, among other policies.

On Wednesday, Rep. Jimmy Gomez, R-Calif., said he would push to oust Green from Congress. Gun control advocacy groups also said Green should resign from Congress.
