The Navy is creating a Professional Flight Instructor (PFI) program that will allow pilots and naval flight officers to remain in the Navy later in their careers as flight instructors outside of the normal sea/shore rotation.
Announced today in a message from NAVADMIN, the PFI program aims to address the readiness and retention challenges facing today's naval aviation community.

"As the naval aviation inventory faces several challenges, especially in the [tactical aviation] community, our ability to fully complement both the manufacturing and operational segments is increasingly challenged." According to NAVADMIN, the first panel to select the first professional flight instructors will meet on November 20, and applications for consideration for the PFI position are due on November 13.
